History of Choice Organics
Choice Organics was founded in 1991 by Martin Freemantle.
Having grown up in rural Hampshire on a 1000 acre mixed farm (now part of Jody Scheckter’s biodynamic operation) Martin was exposed to the ‘culture of agriculture’ from an early age. By the age of 17 he’d already opened his own farm shop and had even started a wholesale division supplying restaurants with high quality conventional produce and rare varieties. The business expanded rapidly, and Martin’s expertise with produce saw him supply demanding customers such as Marco Pierre White’s Yew Tree restaurant.
After a few successful years Martin sold the business and moved to London to work in New Covent Garden Market. It was here that he realised the demand for organic produce was not being met, sowing the seeds for Choice Organics, which he set up in 1991.
As the business grew through the 90’s, Martin established firm partnerships with the best organic growers in the UK and Europe, many of whom now plant crops exclusively for Choice Organics, and built an equally strong portfolio of clients keen to access the best possible quality.
Throughout the 2000’s Choice Organics played its part it the rapid growth and maturing of the organic industry and particularly of the organic fresh produce industry. This often involved working closely with growers and suppliers to achieve better retail quality, new lines of availability and developments in packaging according to market trends and sustainability ideals.
This means that Choice Organics can now offer a year round selection of around 100 lines of organic vegetables, 40 lines of organic fruit, plus organic herbs and organic sprouts. The consistency of quality and availability of supply has improved drastically and now it is easily possible to run a complete produce department throughout the year, stocking only organic produce.
Choice Organics Today
In early 2011 Choice Organics moved up a gear to a purpose built new depot with state-of-the-art refrigeration right next to the Western International Market just outside Heathrow.
The increased warehouse space has allowed Choice Organics to further expand its range, while ease of access to the M4, M25 and North Circular has meant much more efficient deliveries, both to Inner London and out into the Home Counties.
Now with an improved online ordering system, it’s no wonder that Choice Organics is the first call for customers seeking the highest quality Organic Produce available.
Our Organic Certification
Choice Organics has maintained its Certified Organic Distributor status under Soil Association standards since 1991. To qualify Choice Organics must meet the Soil Associations established standards and regulations, including on-site inspections.
